Microsoft 365: Reset your password via SSPR


This article provides step-by-step instructions on how to reset your password as part of the Microsoft 365 Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR).

IMPORTANT: When you Reset or Change your password via Microsoft 365 Self-Service Password Reset it immediately changes the password for other systems, like MyRIC, Blackboard, and Starfish


Approximate time to complete steps: 3 - 7 minutes.

What Is Needed to Reset Your Password:


Steps to Reset Password with SSPR:

  1. Give your account name and proof you are human (rather than a computer program)
  2. Verify you own the account, based on the two (2) authentication methods provided during the setup of Microsoft 365 MFA/SSPR
  3. Set your new password

Note: These instructions are identical for computers/laptops and mobile devices. On a mobile device the text is in smaller font size.


Instructions to Reset your password:

  1. In a browser open to the Microsoft login page:
  2. Click on Can’t Access your account? (See screen shot)
  3. On page Which type of account do you need help with? choose Work or school account
  4. Fill out the info needed:
    1. User ID (this is the Microsoft 365 account name)
    2. Enter the characters in the CAPTCHA image
    3. Click Next
  5. Perform two (2) verification steps:
    Here you will have 4 options to choose from. You need to pick 2 from these options. Follow the instructions associated with that method:
    1. Text my mobile phone
    2. Call my mobile phone
    3. Approve a notification on my authenticator app
    4. Enter a code from my authenticator app
  6. Enter your new password.
    1) You will need to enter your new password twice.
    2) Click Finish.

You are all set!

Text my phone number

  1. Enter your phone number (this is the mobile number you provided during the setup/registration - see screen shot)
  2. Click Text (within seconds your mobile phone will receive a text message with a Verification Code - see screen shot)
  3. Enter your Verification Code
  4. Click Next


Call my phone number

  1. Enter your phone number
  2. Click Call
  3. You will receive a phone call from Microsoft
  4. Follow the instructions given to you by Microsoft.
  5. After you complete the call, you will automatically be taken to the next verification method


Approve a notification on my authenticator app

  1. Click Send Notification
  2. In the Authenticator App on your mobile phone, you will receive a notification prompting you to Deny or Approve the sign-in
  3. Click Approve


Enter a code from my authenticator app

  1. Open the Authenticator app on your mobile phone
  2. In the browser window, enter the 6-digit code that is displayed under your account.
    NOTE: Every 30 seconds the code changes, so enter the code before it changes.
  3. Click Next
