Request Closed Caption for Kaltura
There are two options available for Closed Captions with your Kaltura media.
Rhode Island College automatically provides Closed Captions for all video uploads to Blackboard / Kaltura. They are done using a process referred to as Automated Speech Recognition (ASR). These machine-generated captions achieve an average accuracy of 85% and a turnaround time (TAT) of up to two hours (typically 30 minutes).
Once the captions are completed, they will be labeled as English (auto-generated). They will automatically be made available once completed.

If you have received a Course Accommodation Letter from the Center for Disability Access, you will need to request Professional Closed Captions for any video files included in your course.
These captions are generated by humans, ensuring 99% accuracy and ADA compliance. Turnaround time (TAT) has two options:
Once these HUMAN Captions are completed, they will be labeled as English (United States).

PROFESSIONAL and BEST EFFORT captions have to be approved by the Center for Disability Access. BEST EFFORT can take up to 7 days (typically much faster).
- Open your ‘My Media’ page.
- Click on a video entry (VOD) to open the Media Page.
1. On the Media page, click on the ellipsis menu (three dots).

2. Select the Reach captions & enrich menu item.

Choose your options for Professional Closed Captions:
3. Set Service type to Professional.
4. Set the Turnaround time.
5. Click on the Submit button.

Once you have received Professional Closed Captions. Please check for accuracy. Remember, 99% accuracy still leaves room for errors. You can expect non-English words, technical terms, and proper nouns to be suspect when it comes to accuracy. These errors can be fixed by using the Kaltura Caption Editor. Also, you can download the captions and edit them locally on your machine using the text editor of your choice. We don’t recommend using a word processor such as Word or Google Docs.
Kaltura automatically adds Machine (ASR) captions to your video. There are times when they may not be desirable or useful.
When to remove the auto-generated captions:
- If your video is silent, make sure to delete the automatically generated captions
- If your media is only music, make sure to delete the automatically generated captions
- If your media is not in English, make sure to delete the automatically generated captions
1. Open the Media page for the video where you want to delete the captions.

2. Select the Captions tab and then click on the X in the Actions section to delete the captions.

- From Tools > My Media, click on a video name or thumbnail
- This opens the Media page for the video where you want to Edit Captions.
- Select the Captions tab.
- Click the Edit Captions button or click the pencil icon.

Select the text that you want to edit.

The video will scroll to the selected text. Choosing to edit the timing of the captions is an advanced feature. It is, however, fairly easy to correct spelling errors in your captions, whether they are auto-generated or Professional Closed Captions.
We do not provide Professional Closed Captions for services outside of Blackboard / Kaltura. This means that we cannot provide captions for videos hosted on 3rd-party services such as YouTube or Vimeo. Also, you can’t add Professional Closed Captions to a Zoom recording without first downloading the recording and uploading it to Kaltura. You can only request Professional Closed Captions for videos added to your Kaltura My Media.
