You can create AI Conversations around a topic or scenario to engage your students. AI Conversations include Socratic questioning and role-play exercises. Students can explore and reflect on their own thoughts or role-play a situation related to their learning or career path. Students can also flag any bias or errors from the AI as part of our Trustworthy AI Approach. Reflection helps students understand the responsible use of AI services.
There are two elements to the AI Conversation activity:
- Socratic Questioning: Conversations encourage students to think critically through continuous questioning.
- Role-play: Conversations allow students to act out a scenario with the AI persona.
- Reflection Question: This asks students to share their thoughts on the activity. Reflection Questions are also gradable.

2. Advanced Language Settings in AI Conversation

Instructors can enforce a language for their AI Conversations. When a language is enforced, the AI responds in that language for the entire conversation and will not switch, even if a student asks it to, or responds in a different language. This gives instructors a reliable way to keep language-practice activities in the target language, so students cannot opt out of the challenge partway through.
The language can be found on step 2 of the Conversation Settings under Advanced Options.

Click on the Enforce Conversation box and choose your language. Once you have chosen your language, click Save.

As you interact with the AI, the conversation will stay within the language that it was set up for, even if the student answers in a different language. You can see an example of this below where the language setting was set to Spanish, the student responded in English, but the AI responded back in Spanish, therefore enforcing the original language settings. You can also post your initial instructions in the Context box in English and still require the conversation to take place in a different language (see below).
